Week Three: What Long Stays Get Wrong, and How to Get Them Right

Date
October 18, 2026

Anyone can make a first night feel good. The real test of a long stay comes around week three, and that's the week we design for.

By Steven Jennings and Nick Ortbals, Linea Stays

Anyone can make a first night feel good. A clean room, a decent bed, a working Wi-Fi password. The real test of a stay comes later — around week three, when the novelty is gone and someone is trying to live a normal life in a place that isn't theirs.

That's the week we think about most.

The quiet cost of a temporary place

When someone is sent to a new city for a residency, an assignment, a relocation, or while their home is being repaired, their housing becomes the backdrop for everything else. If it's built for a weekend, small frictions add up: no real kitchen, nowhere to work, no way to keep a routine. People start counting days instead of settling in.

What we design for instead

Before Linea, Steven spent twenty years in Kansas City dining rooms. The best ones taught him to notice what a guest needs before they ask. We brought that thinking home. Here's what it looks like in practice:

  • A kitchen meant for cooking. Because a home-cooked dinner on a Tuesday matters more than people expect.
  • A place to work. A workspace in the kitchen, good light and Google Fiber.
  • A way to move. A Peloton studio and a movement room, so routines survive the trip.
  • Rest that holds up. Quiet bedrooms and beds built for real sleep.
  • A person, not a portal. You reach us directly. Problems get solved the same day.

Why location still matters

Our first home sits in Rosedale, within walking distance of the KU Medical Center campus. For a visiting clinician, a five-minute walk instead of a commute gives back time and energy every single day.

For the people doing the placing

If you coordinate housing for others, you already know the stay reflects on you. A good one makes the assignment easier. A bad one turns into extra calls and an unhappy employee. We'd like to be the easy part.

We built Linea for the moments in between — the weeks between one chapter and the next. They should still feel worth inhabiting.
